The production of glass in Czechoslovakia, now known as the Czech Republic, began 800 years ago. By the late 1300's the Czech glass workshops were recognized worldwide for expertise in engraving, innovative colored glass, and elaborate decorating techniques. By the early 20th century more artisans were engaged in the production of crystal than anywhere else in the world apart from France. By 1936, the area was producing 40% of the world's glass.

Not all was devastated during World War II, nor during the communist regime thereafter. Although the Czech government controlled the factories and cut their ties to the outside world, the medium of glass was exempted from governmental control that regulated all other artistic production. This exemption only served to attract more talented artists.

While the world has had little or no exposure to Czech glass because of Communist rule, the heritage and expertise has endured. Today's consumers are on the verge of being treated to a world of expertise that has been hidden from them for the past 50 years. All pieces in The Desna Collection are hand made by the most skilled Czech glassmakers. Not only are they beautiful works of art to enjoy but also an important piece of history.
